Friends of the KomponistenQuartier Association

Great art rarely arises in isolation. Telemann found wealthy patrons in Hamburg who made his concerts possible. Brahms owed his journey from the Hamburg "Gängeviertel" to the concert halls of Europe not least to the people who believed in him early on. And Mahler forged a network of friendships and supporters in Hamburg, without which his work would hardly have achieved the radiance we experience today. For these composers, patronage was not a marginal phenomenon—it was a prerequisite for their success.

The KomponistenQuartier also thrives on people for whom this music means something. Perhaps you know this feeling: a melody by Brahms that has accompanied you since childhood; the discovery that Fanny Mendelssohn was just as great a composer as her celebrated brother Felix; or simply the joy that all these life stories are brought together in the houses on a single Hamburg street. Such connections are precious—and they are a reason to preserve the KomponistenQuartier as a vibrant place where new generations of visitors can also discover them.

As a member of the Friends of the KomponistenQuartier Association, you will become part of a community that supports and develops this extraordinary ensemble of six museums under one roof. You will make exhibitions, concerts, and educational programs possible – thus keeping alive something unique in this form: the rich history of Hamburg as one of Europe's most important musical cities.

We look forward to welcoming you.

About KomponistenQuartier Hamburg

The KomponistenQuartier Hamburg (Hamburg Composers' Quarter - KQ) unites six small museums dedicated to Georg Philipp Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Adolf Hasse, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, and Gustav Mahler. Located on the historic Peterstrasse, one of the Hanseatic city's most beautiful streets, visitors can explore their lives and works. All of them were connected to Hamburg through family, creative periods, encounters, or professional experiences.

Founded 2015 as a cooperation of six composers' societies, the KQ makes the rich and long-standing musical history of the city of Hamburg accessible and helps to continue this history. Music – History – Hamburg: three pillars whose multifaceted dimensions define the KQ’s mission and identity.
